MORGANTON, N.C. (AP) - A sheriff says a man wanted in the deaths of a North Carolina couple was fatally shot by officers during a manhunt.

Burke County Sheriff Steve Whisenant told WSOC-TV in Charlotte that three officers killed the suspect Wednesday afternoon.

Whisenant says an officer also was shot and killed during the manhunt.

The sheriff says more law enforcement officers joined the hunt for the man about 10 miles north of Morganton.

The manhunt began after friends of the couple hadn’t heard from them since Friday and contacted authorities. When deputies reached the home on Wednesday, they found the couple’s bodies. Officials say there was a sign of a struggle at the home.
