NEW YORK (AP) - Former New York City Comptroller and failed mayoral candidate John Liu (LOO’) is suing the city Campaign Finance Board. He says the board unfairly crippled his campaign by denying him matching funds in last year’s race for mayor.

Liu filed a federal civil rights suit Wednesday in Manhattan.

The campaign board says it oversight is always “tough, but fair.” It’s declining to comment further. The city Law Department says it will review Liu’s suit.

In denying the money, the board cited “substantial evidence” of campaign misdeeds, including straw donors.

A former Liu campaign treasurer and former fundraiser had been convicted of scheming to circumvent donation limits. Liu himself was never charged with any wrongdoing and vigorously denies it.

Liu got 7 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary.
