TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey state prison inmate accused of choking and beating a corrections officer last month has been indicted on attempted murder charges.

Fuquan Alexander was also charged with aggravated assault in the indictment recently handed up by a Mercer County grand jury. It was made public on Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the 29-year old Alexander choked the officer and punched her in the head and face numerous times on Feb. 1, causing serious bodily injury.

Alexander is serving a 30-year sentence for a February 2008 carjacking and kidnapping in Essex County. It was not known if he has retained a lawyer regarding the new charges.
