GLENS FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a woman who tried to rescue her dogs from the upper Hudson River has died after she broke through the ice and was pulled from the water by a firefighter.

Officials tell local media that they believe 64-year-old Katherine Kuhn of was walking her dogs along the river in Glens Falls Tuesday afternoon when one or both of the pets fell through the ice.

Authorities say she tried to rescue the dogs and also broke through the ice. A passerby heard her calls for help and called 911.

A firefighter crawled out about 30 feet onto the ice and pulled the woman to shore. She was taken to Glens Falls Hospital, where she later died.

Police say she was from Glens Falls.

The dogs were turned over to the SPCA.
