RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Jeremy Sheppard scored 27 points and Quaman Burton added 14 points and 14 assists as John Marshall defeated George Wythe 74-56 on Thursday afternoon to win the Virginia High School League’s Group 3A boys state championship at the Siegel Center.

Taqqi Muhammad added 12 points as the Justices (22-5), Group AAA runners-up last year, won their first state title since 1954.

John Marshall made 28 of 55 field goal attempts (51 percent). They took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Maliek White led Wythe (22-5) with 19 points and Dashawn Hewlett had 12 rebounds.

George Wythe’s state championship appearance came just one year after the Bulldogs finished 6-15.
