NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Nine-time Grammy winner and Pulitzer Prize recipient Wynton Marsalis will be the keynote speaker at Tulane University’s commencement this spring.

University President Scott Cowen made the announcement in an email message to university staff Friday. He described Marsalis as one of the “world’s most-acclaimed musicians, bandleaders, composers, educators and cultural ambassadors.”

Marsalis, a New Orleans native, has produced more than 70 albums and is artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York.

NOLA.com ‘ The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1iS2ZH8 ) Cowen said he sought Marsalis for the spring commencement after he was moved by a speech Marsalis made at a special Martin Luther King Day event marking the reopening of Tulane, Xavier, Dillard and Loyola universities after Hurricane Katrina.

The ceremony is scheduled May 17 at the Superdome.
