ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) - Lindenwood University in suburban St. Louis has dismissed a 21-year-old student who falsely claimed that she had been sexually assaulted on campus.
University president Jim Evans said in a news release Monday that Lindenwood is a safe campus and has a zero tolerance policy for those who commit crimes like lying about an assault.
Joanna Newberry of Des Peres is facing misdemeanor charges of making a false report. She told St. Charles police on March 7 that she had been attacked in a library restroom, but she fought off the assailant and was able to get away.
The report prompted an alert sent to more than 12,000 students and staff.
Five days later, Newberry admitted she made up the story. She didn’t say why.
