SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The president and chief executive officer of the South Carolina Hospital Association is speaking about the state and its relationship with the Affordable Care Act.

Thornton Kirby is slated to speak Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Wofford College in Spartanburg.

The lecture is part of a guest lecture series on health care policy and administration sponsored by the Wofford Department of Government.

More than 1 million people in South Carolina have health coverage through the government program for the poor and disabled known as Medicaid.

South Carolina is among the states that have not expanded Medicaid eligibility as the Affordable Care Act intended. The U.S. Supreme Court ruling upholding the law made it an option rather than a mandate.
