KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - A 2-year-old Central Texas boy has died from wounds suffered when he and another child were attacked by a dog as they walked home from a playground.

Killeen police say the bull mastiff was dragging the boy down a road Saturday in a residential neighborhood when a person who witnessed the attack fired on it. The dog released the 2-year-old and ran away.

The boy suffered numerous bites and was taken to a hospital where he died.

Police say the 2-year-old was walking with an 8-year-old girl and a teenager when the dog charged them. It initially attacked the girl but people nearby were able to pull it away. It then turned on the 2-year-old.

The 8-year-old was hospitalized in stable condition.

Animal control officers took custody of the dog.
