EUGENE, Ore. (AP) - A Eugene man who had been accused of assaulting his 92-year-old former mother-in-law is now facing a manslaughter charge.

William Fred Brockamp was arrested Dec. 23, just hours after his ex-wife came home and found her mother, Viola Kelly, with a bloodied face and bruised arm. Kelly died eight days later, and The Register-Guard reports (https://is.gd/2NInxg ) that prosecutors have now upped the charge to manslaughter, which carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison for a conviction.

The 50-year-old Brockamp pleaded not guilty to the earlier charges of third-degree assault and criminal mistreatment. According to a Eugene Police detective’s sworn affidavit, he claimed he defended himself when Kelly attacked him, giving her a shove that caused her to land on her face.

Brockamp was arraigned Friday in Lane County Circuit Court on the manslaughter charge. He and Viola Kelly’s daughter, Carol Kelly, divorced in 1997 but continued living together.
