FRISCO, N.C. (AP) - The main highway along North Carolina’s Outer Banks is open again after road workers replaced a crumbling culvert underneath.

The state Department of Transportation says it has reopened North Carolina Highway 12 on Hatteras Island in Frisco. The DOT says it closed the road Friday evening and completed the fix for traffic to flow again on Saturday.

Highway workers say they needed to replace the deteriorating pipe now to prevent a potential emergency closure later. A road resurfacing project is scheduled to take place in Frisco later this spring.
