SLIDELL, La. (AP) - Slidell Police report two water incidents involving children in the area in less than 24 hours.

The first occurred Saturday afternoon at Heritage Park. Investigators said a 14-year-old boy jumped into Bayou Bonfouca after his friends allegedly dared him to do so.

The second occurred Sunday morning and involved a 3-year-old who was found face down in a homeowner’s pool.

Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said the teenager was listed in critical condition at a New Orleans hospital; the toddler was pronounced dead about 10:30 a.m. at Slidell Memorial Hospital.

The names of the victims have not been released.

Seuzeneau, in a news release, said when the teenager hit the water, he went under but never emerged to the surface.

Bystanders who saw him jump in the bayou also jumped in and found the teen at the bottom of the waterway. After pulling the teen to safety, Officer Tommy Benasco Jr. arrived and began CPR.

When emergency crews arrived, the child had begun slowly breathing. He’s currently hospitalized in critical condition at Tulane Medical Center in New Orleans.

In Sunday’s incident, Seuzeneau said a homeowner woke up about 9:30 a.m. to find the toddler face down in their pool. The child was transported to Slidell Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead about 10:30 a.m., police said.

The toddler lived across the street from where he was found. The child’s parents said he had somehow opened a bedroom window and got out of the home undetected.

“The parents had last seen the child … around 7 a.m. when he was watching cartoons on television,” Seuzeneau said.

“This is any parent’s worst nightmare,” Police Chief Randy Smith said. “I know these events have not only been hard on the families of the two victims, but have affected everyone involved, including my officers, first responders and the hospital staff.”
