PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona’s public health system continues to add more trauma centers.

The Chandler Regional Medical Center is getting provisional status as a designated Level 1 trauma center.

State Health Services Director Will Humble says Chandler-area residents have long said there’s a need for a top-tier trauma center in Phoenix’s southeastern suburbs.

Chandler Regional says its trauma designation comes as the hospital is adding 96 beds, expanding its emergency department and increasing its operating room capacity.

Elsewhere in the state, recently designated Level 4 trauma centers include hospitals in Lake Havasu City, Payson, Prescott and Sun City West, according to Humble’s department.
