BURLINGTON, N.C. (AP) - Police in Burlington say a man who died after his car crashed into a building suffered a medical emergency before the accident.
A statement from police says when officers reached the scene Monday, they found a 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser had struck the building. Officers said the driver was unresponsive, and they removed him from the vehicle and began CPR until emergency personnel arrived.
Authorities said 75-year-old Garland Rudolph Gilbert was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Witnesses told police that Gilbert’s car went through an intersection, veered into oncoming traffic, ran through a parking lot and hit the building.
No one inside the building , which housed a hearing care center, was hurt. Damage to the building was estimated at $10,000.
