TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) - Michigan is receiving $35.2 million from the federal government this year under a program that divides among the states revenues from excise taxes paid by hunters, anglers and boaters.
U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell said Tuesday the payments will support fish and wildlife conservation and recreation projects while boosting education initiatives that encourage children to enjoy the outdoors.
A total of $1.1 billion is being distributed to the states. The money comes from taxes generated by sales of sport firearms, ammunition, archery equipment, fishing tackle and electric outboard motors.
State wildlife agencies provide matching funds for programs designed to sustain healthy fish and wildlife populations.
