JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi’s elected state auditor is gaining new power to examine how money is spent on state-supported economic development projects.
Gov. Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1318 (https://bit.ly/1mtbuZJ ) on Monday, and it becomes law July 1.
It says the auditor can examine details on a wide variety of projects that receive state aid, from manufacturing concerns to movie production. State Auditor Stacey Pickering says Tuesday that the change will increase transparency in state government.
The bill passed the House 119-0 on Feb. 13 and the Senate 51-0 on March 11.
