SMITHFIELD, N.C. (AP) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol says two people have been killed and at least five others hurt in a wreck on Interstate 95 near Smithfield.

Troopers say the wreck happened shortly before 3 a.m. Wednesday near U.S. 70 Business.

Troopers say a Chevrolet Avalanche traveling north on I-95 crossed the median and hit a minivan.

Officials say two of the people in the minivan died. Several of the people injured were in the Avalanche. They were taken to WakeMed hospital. Three of those were children.

The names of the victims have not been released.

I-95 reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
