HOWELL, Mich. (AP) - An 8-year-old Michigan student is being honored for efforts to raise money so all children at his school would be able to buy hot lunch.

The Livingston County Daily Press & Argus of Howell reports (https://bit.ly/1jIQtWl ) Cayden Taipalus started the effort with his mother by raising $64 though bottle and can returns and donations, and online fundraising has since brought in more than $27,000.

Cayden is a third-grader at Challenger Elementary in Howell Public Schools.

Amber Melke-Peters says her son’s efforts began after he saw a boy put a hot lunch back and get a cheese sandwich instead. Cayden was honored Monday at by the district’s Board of Education. During a ceremony, he introduced his family, shook hands with board members and left quietly.
