LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) - Human remains found west of Boulder have been identified as those of a 15-year-old Denver boy who disappeared in 2001.

The Longmont Times-Call reported Wednesday (https://tinyurl.com/m9vxhve ) that Cristobal James Flores‘ remains were turned over to his family last week.

The family reported that he ran away in September 2001.

Boulder County Coroner Emma Hall says the remains were found in August 2002, but there were no clues to their identity. Investigators estimated the person had been dead nearly a year and the cause of death couldn’t be determined.

A DNA sample was taken and the body was buried.

Hall says Flores‘ family asked police to begin a missing person investigation in 2009. Relatives’ DNA was matched to the remains in 2012.

Flores‘ family didn’t immediately return a phone call.
