RICE, Wash. (AP) - A Spokane County sheriff’s spokesman says an off-duty Stevens County sheriff’s detective shot and killed a man Tuesday night in a shootout near the northeast Washington town of Rice. The detective suffered minor wounds from shotgun pellets.
Spokane Deputy Craig Chamberlin said the unidentified detective was responding to a home in an isolated area after a neighbor called for help, saying a stranger was trying to kick in the door. When the detective arrived, Chamberlin says the intruder turned and began firing a shotgun at the detective.
The spokesman says the detective fired back, killing the man.
The detective reportedly was hit in the hand and ear by shotgun pellets. He was treated at a local hospital.
The Spokane County sheriff’s office is investigating.
