MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A retired teacher accused of choking her granddaughter until she was unconscious has been found not guilty by reason of severe mental disease or defect.

AL.com reports (https://bit.ly/1dsVy6D) a judge on Wednesday cited a psychological examination when he made a ruling in 54-year-old Shirley Bowman’s case. Investigators have said the woman was riding in a car with her daughter and granddaughter when she pushed her daughter out of the car and choked the 4-year-old girl. She was charged with attempted murder.

The girl was taken to a local hospital and recovered. Forensic psychologists have said Bowman was suffering from a severe psychological issue and didn’t understand the severity of her actions.

The state must now decide whether or not to commit Bowman to a psychiatric facility.
