DECATUR, Ala. (AP) - A fire at an apartment complex in northern Alabama has claimed the lives of two young children.

Decatur police Lt. John Crouch said the two children, who are believed to be pre-school age, died in the blaze at West Ridge Apartments in Decatur.

He said the fire, in a lower unit of the apartments, was reported around 7:30 a.m. Thursday.

The Decatur Daily reports (https://bit.ly/1o4cZzc) that other family members were able to escape. Crouch said firefighters didn’t believe there was anybody else trapped in the apartment building.

Crouch said investigators were trying to determine how the fire started.
