COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - A Coventry contractor has been accused of misappropriating more than $90,000 in funds from customers for work he never performed.

Rhode Island State Police said they arrested Scott Ferguson Wednesday on charges of unlawful appropriation of funds and passing a fraudulent check. He was arraigned and released on $10,000 personal recognizance.

Police investigated complaints from three customers who hired Ferguson to do construction projects at their home or business. Authorities say the three made substantial payments to Ferguson to purchase materials but that Ferguson never returned to do the work.

Bank records allegedly show he used the money for ATM withdrawals, purchases unrelated to the construction projects and payments on several personal debts.

A telephone listing in Ferguson’s name was busy Thursday afternoon.
