TUSCUMBIA, Ala. (AP) - A funeral is planned Sunday in northwest Alabama for Elizabeth Ann Heflin, the widow of U.S. Sen. Howell Heflin of Tuscumbia.

Family friend Bob Martin said she died Wednesday at her home in Tuscumbia. She was 88 and had been in declining health.

The Heflins were married for 53 years before Howell Heflin died in 2005. He was a World War II veteran who served as chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court from 1971 to 1977 and then in the U.S. Senate from 1979 until retiring in 1997.

Morrison Funeral Home announced that her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Episcopal Church in Sheffield. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Tuscumbia.

Survivors include a son, Tom Heflin of Tuscumbia, and two grandchildren.
