THOMPSON, Iowa (AP) - The mayor pro-tem is serving out the remainder of the mayor’s term in the northern Iowa city of Thompson, because the mayor died two days before his re-election in November.

The Mason City Globe Gazette (https://bit.ly/1gZJghb ) says Mayor pro-tem Jeff Hughes is handling the duties until January, when the council is expected to appoint someone from the community of 502 people. Thompson sits about six miles from the Minnesota state line.

Mayor Roger Johnson died Nov. 3, two days before the Nov. 5 election. His name remained on the ballot, and Winnebago County officials say Johnson received more votes than any other person who received one or more write-in votes.
