ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has appointed a lawyer to be executive director of the New York State Athletic Commission, which regulates professional boxing in the state.

David Berlin’s appointment was approved Wednesday by the commission board. He will be responsible starting in May for overseeing the commission’s daily operations.

The commission oversees professional boxing and wrestling matches and licenses boxers, gyms and promoters.

Berlin, as a lawyer, has represented boxers, trainers, managers and promoters and has written about the sport.

He is a former staff attorney at the Criminal Defense Division of the Legal Aid Society.
