RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The attorney for a man accused of dragging a Box Elder police officer with a car wants statements John Root made to investigators while he was in a hospital excluded during trial.

The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/Qj2UQn) an April 21 hearing has been scheduled on defense attorney Randy Connelly’s request.

Authorities allege Root fled from officers who tried to serve him with a parole violation warrant on New Year’s Day. They say Officer Nick Rosser became caught in a car door and was dragged for several feet. He wasn’t seriously hurt.

Root was captured two days later and needed stitches at a hospital when he fell and hit his head after officers used a stun gun to subdue him. He has pleaded not guilty to aggravated assault charges.
