SAYRE, Okla. (AP) - The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is investigating after an officer shot and killed a man who had attacked him with an ax.

Authorities say Sayre police officers attempted Thursday to serve felony warrants to 43-year-old Larry Dale Plaster in Sayre. Authorities say Plaster ran and the officers followed, calling for backup. A deputy joined the chase and attempted to arrest Plaster when Plaster struck him several times with an ax. The deputy fired several rounds, at least one of which hit and killed Plaster, who died at the scene.

Police say they used tasers in an attempt to apprehend Plaster, but the tasers were not effective.

The deputy was treated and released from an area hospital. His name has not been released.
