PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A freshman Democrat who served previously as an assistant Rhode Island attorney general has been named chairman of the House Municipal Government Committee.

Speaker Nicholas Mattiello announced the appointment of Democratic Rep. Robert Craven of North Kingstown on Thursday.

Craven’s legislative biography says he is an assistant solicitor and probate judge in Charlestown and an assistant solicitor in East Providence. He has his own law practice in North Kingstown.

Craven served previously as solicitor for the town of Foster and as legal counsel to the Rhode Island Board of Elections. In the attorney general’s office, he was chief of the public corruption unit.

Craven replaces Rep. John DeSimone, the new majority leader.

More committee chairmanships are expected to be announced by Mattiello next week.
