BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) - New York’s Suffolk County Highway Patrol unit issued 40 summonses during a 6-hour checkpoint safety inspection of fuel tanker trucks.

Three tankers also were taken out of service for safety hazards.

A total of 15 trucks were inspected between 9 p.m. Thursday and 3 a.m. Friday in Brentwood off the Long Island Expressway.

The initiative was conducted to ensure compliance with commercial motor vehicle and hazardous material safety regulations.

Police say 25 summonses were issued for equipment violations.

Seven trucks were cited for violations of New York State tax laws.

And eight summonses were given out for violations of the state environmental conservation law.

State police, environmental conservation police and the state tax department also were involved in the interagency enforcement inspection.
