HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he recently encouraged Ted Kennedy Jr. to run for an open seat in the Connecticut state Senate.

Malloy said Friday he spoke with Kennedy earlier in the week and “urged him to give it consideration.”

Earlier this week, the son of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts aid he would decide within two weeks whether to seek the Democratic nomination for the 12th Senatorial District seat being vacated by retiring Guilford Democrat Edward Meyer.

Malloy said he has gotten to know Kennedy and his wife over the last eight years and he thinks very highly of Kennedy. Malloy said Kennedy would “be a great addition to the legislature if he decided to run for the Senate, and I hope he does.”
