PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Prosecutors say a man wanted in Massachusetts had been living in Maine for years, fraudulently using his brother’s name and Social Security number.

Gary Irving, also known as Gregory Irving and Gregg Irving of Gorham pleaded guilty on Thursday in federal court to being a fugitive in possession of firearms and aggravated identity theft.

Court records show the 53-year-old Irving was arrested on an outstanding fugitive warrant from Massachusetts for a 1979 conviction for violent rape and other crimes. He had been living under a false identity in Maine since 1981, using his brother’s identification. The records say he also used an incorrect date of birth to renew his driver’s license. At the time he was arrested, he had nine firearms in his home.

He awaits sentencing.
