LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - A driver accused of hitting and killing a man in a motorized wheelchair in 2009 has pleaded guilty to felony hit-and-run.

The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1eOXZNb ) 48-year-old Ellis Thomas Charles Sr. was originally charged with vehicular homicide, DWI and hit-and-run in the death of 54-year-old Gary Wayne Charles. The two men are not related.

Ellis Charles was to go to trial Thursday on the charge of vehicular homicide but pleaded guilty to the amended charge. A presentence investigation was ordered; sentencing is set for June 6.

On May 10, 2009, police say Gary Charles was traveling south on North Shattuck Street when Ellis Charles struck him from behind. Gary Charles was ejected from his wheelchair and later died from his head injuries.
