NEW YORK (AP) - A Staten Island man has been arrested after allegedly leading police on an 80-mph chase as he swallowed bags of crack cocaine.

Police say they spotted Richard Jackson in a parked car with what appeared to be a bag of crack on Tuesday.

The Staten Island Advance (https://bit.ly/1frPKFT0 ), citing court papers, says when police approached Jackson took off, running red lights and causing pedestrians to scatter.

Police say Jackson’s passenger screamed to be let out as Jackson allegedly swallowed bags of crack.

Prosecutors say Jackson faces charges that include reckless endangerment, obstructing governmental administration and criminal possession of a controlled substance. It wasn’t immediately known how many bags he allegedly swallowed.

He’s being held on $1,500 bail and is due back in court Monday.

His attorney’s name wasn’t immediately known.
