TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say an armed intruder who broke into a home has been shot dead by a neighbor who heard cries for help from the home’s occupant.

Pima County sheriff’s Deputy Tracy Suitt says the neighbor and the intruder exchanged gunfire early Saturday outside the home southwest of Tucson. He says the neighbor heard sounds of distress and went to investigate.

No one else was shot, but Suitt didn’t know if anyone was injured in the initial home invasion. He says homicide detectives are continuing to investigate.

Suitt says more than one intruder was involved, but he didn’t know how many.

Deputies unsuccessfully tried to perform life-saving measures on the wounded man. No identities have been released.

Authorities learned of the home invasion through a 911 hang-up call.
