MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Police and fire officials in Montgomery are investigating the cause of a structure fire near Maxwell Air Force Base while also trying to determine how a man at the scene suffered a gash to his neck.

WAKA-TV (https://bit.ly/1g91NYg ) reported that the blaze started Friday around noon.

A 60-year-old man was found on the ground with a 2.5-inch-long cut to his neck that authorities described as a significant injury, which is now part of a criminal probe.

Public Safety Director Chris Murphy said officials believe the fire may be a criminal matter. Montgomery police have begun a criminal investigation.

The injured man, who was conscious an alert when he was found, was taken to a hospital.
