SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) - A western Nebraska woman accused of both helping her husband commit suicide and hiding his body could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Deann Kimble, 53, of Sidney, was arrested Wednesday and has since been charged with assisting suicide and concealing a body - both felonies - in the death of her husband, 61-year-old Russell Kimble, Cheyenne County Sheriff’s deputies said.

In an arrest affidavit, deputies say Kimble told them that when she and Russell married in 2004, she promised she would not intervene when he decided it was “his time to die.” She said he also did not want a funeral and promised “to endure any backlash, including legal repercussions, family and opinions.”

She told investigators that on March 22, believing he was gravely ill, she helped Russell Kimble position himself on a shower curtain on the floor of the storage unit in which they lived. She said he then shot himself in the face with a shotgun while she sat in their van and listened to a couple of songs on the radio.

Investigators say she told them she then wrapped his body is the shower curtain and a sheet, bound his feet together and used a cargo strap to tow the body with the van to a nearby area the couple had often used as a dumping ground.

She covered the body with dirt, gravel and firewood, the affidavit said.

Deputies found the body on Wednesday, and Kimble was charged Friday. She remained in the Cheyenne County jail Saturday on $10,000 bail and could not be reached for comment.

Attorney William Madelung of Scottsbluff said Saturday that he had been appointed late Friday by the court to represent Kimble. He declined to comment on the case.

Kimble’s first court appearance on the charges is set for next Friday.
