PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Canadian consulate plans to set up shop temporarily in Pittsburgh next month to further promote economic and cultural ties between that country and Pennsylvania.

The Consulate General of Canada has offices in New York City that cover Pennsylvania and four other states, but they’ll head to Pittsburgh from April 7 to 11 for a visit that will focus on trade, energy, security and investment issues between Canada and western Pennsylvania in particular.

The location of the “Pop-up Canada” events will be somewhere downtown, to be announced later, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (https://bit.ly/1fVhiXu ) reported Monday.

“The Canada-Pennsylvania relationship is thriving,” Consul General John Prato said in a statement. “Canada is, in effect, the state’s No. 1 customer.”

Almost 22,000 Pennsylvania residents work for Canadian-owned companies, and “Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania are intrinsic to that relationship,” Prato said.

Craig Davis, who was born in Fort Erie, Ontario, near Niagara Falls, is the chief executive officer of VisitPittsburgh, which promotes tourism.

“The symmetry between Canada and Pittsburgh is pretty clear,” Davis said, noting that Canadians like to visit the city for golf, shopping and, of course, hockey. “We draw a lot of Canadians to Pittsburgh and we want Pittsburgh locals to travel the world.”

The consulate isn’t the only Canadian group heading to the city later this year.

The Travel Media Association of Canada is holding its annual convention in Pittsburgh from May 28-31. This is the first time the Canadian travel writers will meet in the United States and only the second time the group has held its convention outside Canada. The other time was in Wales in 2010.
