DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa’s two state Democratic officeholders are supporting state Sen. Jack Hatch for governor.

At a Capitol press conference Monday, Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald and Attorney General Tom Miller announced they were backing the Des Moines Democrat, who is expected to be the party’s nominee for governor against Republican Gov. Terry Branstad.

Miller and Fitzgerald, with a combined nearly 60 decades in office, say they had worked with several governors over the years. Fitzgerald says he’s confident Hatch wouldn’t “shy away from leading and that is exactly what we need.”

The Republican Branstad is in his fifth term, having come back in 2010 after not seeking re-election in 1998 after four terms.

Branstad had more than $4 million in his campaign account in January, to Hatch’s roughly $450,000.
