MODESTO, Calif. (AP) - The publisher and president of a San Joaquin Valley newspaper is moving to a new position at a Seattle-based newspaper group.

The Modesto Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1fyED2D ) that Eric Johnston will leave the paper on March 7 to take a job as chief operating officer at Pioneer News Group, which has operations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. The Bee says a search is underway to replace him, but his successor has yet to be named.

Johnston joined The McClatchy Co. in 1999 at The Fresno Bee, then came to The Modesto Bee in 2000 as director of interactive media. He became publisher in 2009, the first in McClatchy history to be tapped for that role from the business’ digital side.

Johnston said he will start his new job on March 17.
