CINCINNATI (AP) - The University of Cincinnati hopes to promote safety and reduce crime in neighborhoods adjacent to campus through a new team of “safety ambassadors.”

The university says the team of five members and a manager were beginning operations Monday. They’ll be deployed daily from 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. east and south of campus.

A university spokesman says crime has been decreasing in areas around campus but still exists. He says the ambassadors are one of several efforts to promote student safety.

Cincinnati police and the university’s interim public safety director say the ambassadors will supplement city and university police patrols by providing an extra watch in certain areas.

Team members have trained with university police to become familiar with services available to help keep students safe.
