NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) - Authorities are adding details to the foot chase and shootout in New Bern that left a suspect dead and two North Carolina police officers wounded.

Police identified 35-year-old Bryan Stallings of New Bern as the slain man who shot the two officers Friday night.

New Bern police say Officer Alexander Thalmann approached Stallings on foot to ask questions before Stallings ran. Thalmann called for backup and chased. Stallings turned around and shot the 22-year-old Thalmann in the face.

Officer Justin Wester arrived quickly and followed Stallings, who turned and shot the officer in the leg. The 23-year-old Wester shot and hit Stallings several times, killing him.

Wester has been released from a Greenville hospital, while Thalmann is continuing his treatment.

The State Bureau of Investigation is probing the shootings.
