KAHULUI, Hawaii (AP) - A man and two children who were stranded by a rain-swollen river stream at a Maui state park have been rescued.

Fire Services Chief Lee Mainaga says the man and two girls, ages 8 and 9, weren’t able to cross the river at Iao Valley Park Saturday due to rising and turbulent water. He said they waited until the water receded to a safe level before crossing the river with the assistance of firefighters.

No injuries were reported.

A storm system sweeping across the state has brought heavy rain and hail in some parts. A flash flood advisory was issued for Maui County because of heavy rains over windward slopes of East Maui.

Residents are advised to stay away from streams, drainage ditches and low lying areas prone to flooding.
