DALTON, Ga. (AP) - Whitfield County Fire Chief Carl Collins plans to retire from the department in northwest Georgia.

The Daily Citizen reports (https://bit.ly/PahMPz) that when Collins joined the newly formed Whitfield County Fire Department in 1977, he says he only planned to volunteer for a few years.

But Collins had a passion for firefighting and says that he enjoyed every aspect of it.

Five years after joining the fire department, Collins became its chief, a position he has held for more than 30 years.

The 64-year-old Collins says he plans to retire from the position on May 30.
