FREEPORT, N.Y. (AP) - A teenager who says another student slashed her in the face at their Long Island high school is suing the school system. She says officials knew she had been bullied and harassed but didn’t take steps to prevent the attack.

Jazmin Drain and her parents filed a $21 million federal lawsuit this week against the Freeport Union School District. The district says in a statement it “will take appropriate action” to defend itself.

The district says it “always makes the safety of students and staff a top priority.”

Drain is 18. The suit says she was attacked last May at Freeport High School. It says fellow students had harassed her for two years.

The suit says her alleged attacker was arrested and charged with assault. That case is open.
