MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The director of the West Central Montana Avalanche Center in Missoula says the nonprofit center is having a tough time keeping up with expenses.

Director Steve Karkanen tells the Missoulian (https://bit.ly/1pEOunB ) that the center exceeded its budget again this year because of the dangerous snowpack in the surrounding mountains.

Karkanen says he’s concerned that the center cannot continue to provide the same level of service without some financial commitment from Lolo National Forest.

The West Central Montana Avalanche Center provides two avalanche advisories a week during the winter months. It gets financial support from a variety of sources, including the state, donations and people volunteering their time.
