NORTH YARMOUTH, Maine (AP) - Authorities say a barn housing dozens of sheep and hundreds of chickens has been destroyed in an early morning fire in North Yarmouth.

The exact number of animals that died has yet to be determined.

The fire in the West Pownal Road barn was reported by the owners just after 2 a.m. Monday.

By the time firefighters arrived, the barn was engulfed in flames and had begun to collapse. The barn is a total loss.

Some animals escaped into a wooded area near the barn.

The cause remains under investigation and the state fire marshal’s office is investigating.
