FRUITLAND, Utah (AP) - A West Valley City driver is expected to recover after slamming into a moose near Strawberry Reservoir.

Utah Highway Patrol officials say the 61-year-old man was driving on State Road 40 on Saturday night when the moose stepped into the lane.

The driver was unable to stop and hit the animal, sending it up onto the hood and causing the windshield and roof to cave in.

The moose died, while the man suffered cuts. Witness Dacia Jackson described the car as mangled and told the Deseret News the animal was essentially torn in two after the impact.

Officials say the driver was taken to Intermountain Medical Center by helicopter and was in stable condition by Sunday.
