MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (AP) - A May sentencing is set for a Martinsburg man convicted of abuse and neglect charges in the death of his son.

Media outlets report that a Berkeley County Circuit Court jury found 22-year-old James N. Mauldin guilty on Friday following a four-day trial. His faces up to 70 years in prison when sentenced May 29.

Police say Mauldin’s son, 3-year-old Kaiwon Connelley, suffered a fractured skull and other injuries. The boy died on New Year’s Day 2012 at a hospital in Washington, D.C.

Mauldin’s co-defendant and then-girlfriend Jasmine K. Dawkins of Waldorf, Md., was sentenced in February to up to five years in prison. She was convicted last November of gross child neglect creating a substantial risk of serious bodily injury and providing false information to medical personnel.
