SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - Rescuers are searching for a man who went missing while running on a trail in a mountainous region of Northern California.

Placer County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Dena Erwin says dozens of people on Monday were scouring the area for Robert Root, of Modesto. The 55-year-old Root was last seen around 9:30 a.m. Sunday when he became separated from a group of runners training along the Western States Trail near Foresthill.

Erwin said crews were searching on foot and using all-terrain vehicles and search dogs. About 40 people searched for Root on Sunday before the effort was suspended for the evening.

Authorities are especially concerned because Root was dressed in only running gear, and temperatures dropped sharply at night.

Erwin says Root has health issues and is on medication.
